![]() "Got Rhythm" Successful stage performance requires timing and rhythm. This is why tap dance training is very common among stage and screen performers of all types. Tap and its variation, the soft shoe, also show up with great frequency in all kinds of productions. Many well known actors got their early roles because they could carry these dances. Names such as James Cagney, Jimmy Stewart and Debbie Reynolds. Even the legendary Clark Gable did a soft shoe, as did John Wayne. Today it is Richard Gere, John Travolta and Christopher Walken proving the enduring charm of a good soft shoe.

Tap Tap dance is a beloved part of our musical theatre tradition. It arose as a blend of the Scot-Irish step dances and the rhythmic dances of Africa. As one of the truly American art forms, tap dance has had a great influence on our culture. From vaudeville to Broadway and from Fred Astaire to Gregory Hines to even Richard Gere, tap numbers and the performers that pull them off with charm and elegance have captivated American audiences for over one-hundred years. More important to our students, Tap is just really fun! As soon as students put on their first pair of tap shoes and go clacking across the floor, they fall in love with being able to hear their dance and to control the music they make with their feet. Add the lively, up-to-date music that we use in tap class and the high energy levels of the dance and you have an activity just perfect for enthusiastic young learners. Teen and adults are just as taken with tap. Though we love to teach all the dance styles, Tap is special to us at Amy's Studio of Performing Arts. As you can see from the information on the About Us page, tap performance and instruction is a big part of our professional background. We believe the rhythm and stage presence learned early in tap class will enrich all the dance styles as the student progresses in their training. For the adult learner, tap is a fun activity to keep coordination, balance, stamina and strength at youthful levels for as long as the student keeps tapping. Come join in the fun of a tap class. See "Getting Started" for more details about enrolling or "Our Programs" for more details on the course offerings and a calendar of key dates.
